Widening World of Web Series

by Peter Giles on March 22, 2010

Move over Emmys,  the International Academy of Web Television has arrived and we’re now in the build up to the second Streamy Awards which will be held on the 11th April 2010. Winners of last year’s inaugural awards included Neil Patrick Harris and Joss Whedon and this year’s nominees include Lisa Kudrow, Illeana Douglas and Courtney Cox.

And what about Australian talent, do we get a look in I hear you ask? Ozgirl is my answer. It’s producer/director Nicolas Carlton has picked up two nominations for Best Drama Web Series, Best Foreign Web Series and Ozgirl actor Sophie Tilson has been nominated for Best Female Actor in a Drama Web Series. But wait, there’s more:  Clayton Jacobson (Kenny writer/director) and AFTRS VFX graduate Reece Sanders have been nominated for Best Visual Effects in a Web Series for their work on the hilarious Mordy Koots. And not to forget the Best Animated Web Series category – Brisbane’s very own Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw has bagged a nomination for his games inspired Zero Punctuation series. All in all a great show of Australian innovation in the burgeoning field of online entertainment.

So where to next for web series entertainment? Seems the content is getting more sophisticated, production values are lifting, and bigger stars are beginning to show their faces online. This new online format has spawned a new range of portals and brands are beginning to coalesce around online drama.

So you want more? Definitely worth checking out these portals:

L Studio is a Lexus branded portal which features the Lisa Kudrow series Web Therapy which is very entertaining. And after you’ve finished with that brand experience move on to another at My Damn Channel where Easy to Assemble is worth a look featuring actress Illeana Douglas with guest appearances by Justine Bateman and Jeff Goldblum. What’s so great about this series isn’t so much that it pokes fun at Ikea employees and the culture of flat pack furniture and meatballs but that this is Ikea-funded branded entertainment. A brilliant partnership indeed, happy web viewing! And a good place to start is by viewing then voting  in the Streamys Audience Choice Awards here.
